Greenwood SC and the surrounding area abounds with fun
attractions and interesting places to visit. Whether you appreciate the arts
and theatre, or you love history,
there is something for you to enjoy in and
around Greenwood and Abbeville.
If
you enjoy the theatre, the Greenwood Lander
Performing Arts is a community-university
partnership. Some of the world’s most talented
musicians, dancers, singers and actors, come to
the Lander Cultural Center Auditorium. Artists
such as the Harlem Boys Choir and the Moscow
Festival Ballet have performed here. In addition
to its subscription concert series,
Greenwood-Lander Outreach Works sponsors
cultural outreach programs as a way to introduce
local young people to the performing arts. The
Greenwood Community Theatre is another great
place to visit for theatre shows. It offers
year-round entertainment for the entire family
in a newly renovated 300 seat facility. The Theatre
stages top notch shows and is located in the
historic State Theater building, which
originally opened to the public as a movie house
in 1934.
If you enjoy the outdoors, then take a
walk through Park Seed Corporation's Company
gardens. These themed gardens cover
approximately 9 acres and are a pleasure to walk through. Visitors come from all
over the world to see the different types of
gardens which include: tropical gardens, sun and
shade gardens, drought resistant gardens,
grasses, and beautiful, unique rose gardens. The
gardens are at their most brilliant from June
through August, and Park Seed Flower Day, one of
the company's biggest events, takes place in June
each year.
The Railroad Historical Center is a must see for
history and railroad aficionados. Seven vintage
train cars, one acre of semi-formal gardens,
exhibits and memorabilia make up the area's
premier railroad history destination. Group
tours, birthday parties, and event rentals are
available. The center is operated by The Museum
Greenwood. The Museum also features art exhibits
through out the year. In historic Abbeville, the
Burt-Stark Mansion is a place one simply must
visit if you love history, as the home was the
meeting place for the Confederate War Council at
the end of the Civil War. Tours are given year
around.
