Universities
The
Greenwood and Abbeville County regions of SC are home to some distinguished
colleges and universities in South Carolina that
attract students from all over the world. These small schools, many of which are private, have a long history of excellence in education and give our area a great deal of character. Greenwood SC is home to Lander University and Piedmont Technical College, and Abbeville County is home to Erskine College, located in the town of Due West. These schools
also offer area high school students a wide variety of secondary educational opportunities.
Lander University, a four-year, coeducational public university, offers more than 40 areas of study. Lander University was founded in 1872 in Williamston, S.C. as a Methodist women’s college. It was later moved to Greenwood in 1904 and began admitting men in 1943. In 1951 it was purchased by Greenwood County, becoming the only four-year liberal arts college in the United States to be controlled and financed by a county government. Because of their strong sports and academics programs, Lander draws students from two-dozen states and sixteen foreign countries.
Erskine College is a prestigious four year, Christian liberal arts college, located in the small town of Due West South Carolina. The college began when the Associate Reformed Synod of the South opened it as an academy for men. In 1839 it became the first, four year, church affiliated college in South Carolina. In 1927, Erskine began admitting women as the college joined with the Women’s College of Due West. Today, Erskine has several majors in numerous academic programs and has a strong base in theological and seminary studies.
Piedmont Technical College opened in 1966 with only 300 students in 10 programs. Today, more than 5,000 full time students majoring in more than 70 courses of study attend Piedmont Technical College. In addition, the counties of Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenwood, Laurens, McCormick, Newberry, and Saluda each have their own learning centers and staff offering a wide variety of courses and programs. There are 10 to 15 thousand people enrolled in continuing education programs here. PTC has strong ties to the employment needs of the area through business-education partnerships. In fact, many academic programs enjoy 100 percent job placement rates year after year.
